Hello:
You may or may not want to check this out: see all of Hunter's lyrics that contain the same word. I use Alex's web site, but there are probably other ones out there as well. [http://www3.clearlight.com/~acsa/intro.htm] ...search just on Hunter's songs. Here are a few examples [in no particular order]:

pain
eye

see
look
saw
hand
hands
feel
door
window
tree
sky
stars
moon
sun
clouds
walk
run
fire
nothing
God

If you like this stuff, let us know what other words you find or have already found along the way.

I pray that your trip is going well,

One Thing To Try

Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Robert Hunter

Break out your bottle, be in trouble by noon
Never get satisfaction 'cause you boil too soon
Them downtown chippies know your weight to the ounce
But the harder you fall, Jack, the higher you bounce

Stoke up your gator, be ready to ride
But keep your hands and your heart inside
Take it as far as you want to go
Till we can't see the desert for the burning snow

Chorus
But if you're in a hurry
And really go to go
If you're in a hurry
Might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try
And another to fly
You get there quicker
Just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark
Another to bite
The show ain't over
Till you pack up at night

Out of ninety-nine people all running around
Not one in a hundred got his feet on the ground
You find one in a thousand holding some in reserve
For when the real true action comes around the curve
Take care of your people, get some of them fed
Hide the ones in trouble out under your bed
Keep an eye to the future, an ear to the past
After thinking it over, notice nothing much lasts

[chorus]

Don't ever let it get the best of you
Plan what you can, and let the rest shine through
Just so many angles you can possibly see
Figure on those, let the other ones be
Don't be out collecting more than you need
Got a lot of things growing but keep watching those seeds
Got to share in December what you planted in May
If the harvest is empty, find some other good way

[chorus]

How about 'wind' and 'rain' ... ?

That Hunter album Tiger Rose is a terrific piece of work. Am I the only one who prefers the original warbly vocals to the late-80's re-done version? I found a vinyl rip of the original version, but the record skips during 'Yellow Moon."

fenario80: ..."wind" and "rain" are great examples; thanks a lot...

I agree regarding Hunter's LP's as well. Are you aware that "Lou Davenport" has the "JackO'Roses" album transcribed and available for download(?) ...check out the following post; it will direct you to the link for download:

Do you have any Hunter shows on DVD? Let me know.

Thanks for your response,

I have that rip, thank you. I grabbed it when he put up the link, or possibly someone else linked it more recently - what I would love to have is a rip of the original vinyl Tiger Rose, one that doesn't skip in the middle of Yellow Moon ...

I don't have any Hunter DVD's. I saw him a handful of times in the early 80's and it was always a good time, though one time in Boston he threatened us with "a short, lousy set" because no one had paid any attention to his opening act ...

Nope, you're not the only one.

I prefer the original mixes on both "Rum Runners" and "Tiger Rose" to the later re-vamped versions. Also, I like to think that I'd prefer them if the releases came the other way round (get me - later versions first, original versions second). I like to think that I'd have said something like "Wow, these new versions are much better".

Was disappointed with the mix on the CDs when they came out compared to the mix (especially vocals) on the vinyl originals.

He re-did the vocals for the cd release ... I understand the impulse, but it was a bad idea.

That song has an outstanding, bouncelike quality to it; reggae esque I would say, at least the fine version you sent along so many moons ago.

Hello old friend!

It's funny, I thought of it as a "day Job" type tempo. I don't know why

AshesRising...I typed in faith and this came up...

Down The Middle
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: David Nelson

A Hunter/Nelson song first played by the New Riders of the Purple Sage in April 2008. This is my first stab at the lyrics:

River may, river may, river may roll
The road, the road, the road may call
Sunset reaches o'er the peaks may rise
Shining like the gates of paradise

Line down the middle of the road so white
Daylight crashes into night
Sometimes yellow, sometimes red
Where rows of homeless strangers led

My destination is freedom itself
And if I find it, I will share the wealth
Roll down the window, arm on the sill
First coyote cries from the hill

chorus

Been on the road ten thousand days
Line down the middle of the blue highways
Last thing I see as the light does fade
Skull and crossbones on my grave

I can't drive that image from my head
The radio plays tunes of dread
The line in the middle rolls straight to dawn
And that's the faith of the road I'm on

Last night's a thousand years ago
Dawn pours diamonds in the road
Sunlight splashing on the hill
As if to say it always will

The only thing I want deep down
A cup of coffee and a quarter round
The quarter round is as may be
But the cup of coffee definitely

chorus

Some like it cool, some like it hot
Some of us don't care a lot
We only ask that it be true
To the still small voice that speaks in you

Freedom is costly, and dig down deep
The hole in your soul won't let you keep
More than enough to whet your thirst
Though nobody knows that much at first

Slick green moss upon a river rock
Stones by the side of the road may talk
Whatever they say will be a lie
So cover your ears and pass on by

River may, river may, river may roll
The road, the road, the road may call
Sunset reaches o'er the peaks may rise
Shining like the gates of paradise

It's on the new album by New Riders of the Purple Sage 'Where I Come From'
